Day 1 Santander to Salamanca 365 kilometres
We meet near the ferry terminal in Santander. Of course you don't have to travel from Plymouth, you may like to make your own way through France before joining us. Those of you who wish to relax on the Pont Aven can see booking information at http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/ From here we head to Salamanca. Today is the only day that includes any significant autovia riding, but it's well worth it to reach the majestic city of Salamanca. Click here to see more about Salamanca
Onward into Extremadura and what a day this is.
Today we take the old road to Seville, arriving in time to see the city and spend
a
charming Saturday evening in the capital of Andalucía.
According to legend, Sevilla was founded by
Hercules, but for all its fascinating history and important monuments, Sevilla is universally famous for being a joyous town. While the Sevillians are
known for their wit and sparkle, the city itself is striking for its vitality.

We're on a diet of lakes and mountains today, coupled with some fantastic biking roads. The Axarquia region of Andalucia has some of the best scenery in Spain. The Maroma mountain stands at 2080 metres above sea level at it’s highest point, much higher than Ben Nevis, and is often snow capped during the winter and spring months, but before we even reach Lake Vinuela, we have to pass through the breathtaking El Chorro pass (remember Von Ryan's Express) and the Guadalhorce lake district. Stunning, just stunning. Click here for more details
Chilling
out day today. We'll take a leisurely ride to the
Nerja caves before heading into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Ah! the
smell of the pine trees. We end the day at the coastal town of Roquetas del Mar.
Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside, and so does Thoughtful Mark.

Y'all wanna have a good day
today, and we're gonna do our rootin', tootin' best to make sure you do. Leaving
the coast we head inland through the only true desert in Europe, calling at Mini
Hollywood where Clint Eastwood cut his teeth and made a fistful of dollars at
the same time. We end the day back on the coast at Mazarron.

Today
we pass through the breath-taking Reserva Muela de Cortes
on our way to our stop in Requena.
'Water flows throughout the area, creating scenery of great beauty'. That was said two hundred years ago by the Valencian botanist Cavanilles, and the observation still applies today.
Sometimes words fail me; but not very often. Click here for more details
In the Region of Castile-La Mancha, between the Júcar and Huécar river canyons, you will find Cuenca, the city with the UNESCO World Heritage designation. After Muslim troops conquered this area in 714, they soon realized the strategic location and built The Conca alcazaba (arabic fortress) between the two gorges cut by the rivers. This they surrounded with a one km wall.
Cuenca, with its hanging houses truly is unforgettable, and the ride to it is just as memorable. Click here for more details
When we researched this section of the route, we hardly met another vehicle. As we stopped and killed our engines, the sound of silence was deafening; Thoughtful Mark came over quite queer, him being a city boy.
Hidden in the high sierras of the Sistema Iberica mountains the National Park of the Monasterio de Piedra offers one of the most gratifying visits imaginable. The park is one of the protected natural areas of Aragon and is an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Especially noteworthy are the formations link to
river courses such as canyons and ravines -which are both
frequent in this areas- and terraces, as well as unique slope
formations such as needles, pinnacles and monoliths.
In summary, this is the most extensive network of canyons and ravines in
Castilla La Mancha. Click here for more details
Today we take the high road, and what a spectacular place this is! If you like
winding, mountain roads, this is the place for you. I never tire of crossing
these peaks; it's always an exhilarating experience. I don't know if it's the
pure, clean air, or the smell of the pine trees that turns me on, but when I'm
on my bike in the Sierra de Cebollera, I'm probably at my happiest.
