Seville (day 3)
back to the tour
Today,
avoiding the autovia, we follow the old road to Seville.
There is nowhere else in Spain that complies so closely with the foreigner's perception of stereotypical Spain as Seville. For it is here that flamenco, bullfighting and fiesta are a way of life. Never more so than during the Feria de Abril (2 weeks after Easter Sunday) when everyone seems to hit the streets for a week long party.
Seville is Spain's 4th largest city with a population of some 710,000. It is a city with soaring summer temperatures which have approached 50ºC on occasions during the last two summers.
There
is plenty to see including the Cathedral which is now reckoned to be the world's
largest church. There are steps from inside the Cathedral to the top of the 90m
high Giralda which is the minaret of the former Mosque. The climb to the top
provides some great views but stay at the bottom and buy the postcard if you've
got a weak heart! Next to the Cathedral is the Alcázar which is a great
introduction to Moorish art especially as we are going to visit Granada's
Alhambra Palace later during the tour.

Thoughtful Mark likes it here, but he's never said why. I didn't realise he was into culture and fine buildings, or maybe it's the lively bars, the famous nightlife, but I must say it would take a stony heart not to be captivated by Seville's exuberant atmosphere - stylish, confident, ancient, proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving.
An ideal way to discover Seville is this popular hop-on, hop-off city sightseeing tour. You start your sightseeing from the main bus stop near the Torre de Oro use the bus to get you to all the city's main sights. It's a great way to get orientated and be able to see all the city's main attractions including the site of the 1992 Expo and the fabulous Plaza de España in the Maria Luisa park, both of which lie a little outside the well trodden tourist centre where the Cathedral and Alcazar can be found. Prices start from €13 per person.
In order to secure secure parking for our bikes, the hotel is located a short taxi ride from the city centre.
