Sierras and National Parks (day 7)

I was going to let the pictures do the talking, but Thoughtful Mark is here poking me and saying 'You can't just leave it blank, you've got to say something.'

This is probably the most sparsely populated area of Spain, yet the roads are incredible. The scenery is unbelievable and it's quiet, so quiet, so I'm going to go down a point on the font. Oh right, some of you can't hear me.

To be honest, the pictures don't do the place justice. This is where I want to live. I love this area. There are grape vines, sunflowers and a lot of other green things that I don't know the name of.

What I do know is that the Castilla La Mancha has a magic feel about it. On the bike you have a real sense of being at one with your surroundings. The smells, the birds......look I'm going to stop now, I'm getting all emotional.

The nature reserve of 'Muela de Cortes' is spectacular to say the least, and I just can't wait to get back there.

Between the Ayora valley, the Navarrés canal and the deep Júcar river canyon lies a vast plateau topped by the Caroig peak at 1,126m. Today's plant covering is composed of mastic trees and kermes oak trees, although there are some interesting evergreen oaks and ash trees. The Fraile, Ludey or Grande river courses are beauty spots that provide habitats for Iberian water turtles. Sites of geological interest abound here: volcanic remains on the hill of Agrás (Cofrentes), rock formations called Las Quebradas (Teresa de Cofrentes), the Don Juan cave (Jalance) now open for tourist visits, the Júcar river canyon, etc. There are numerous examples of Neolithic rock shelter paintings, paintings in the La Araña cave and the Moreno ravine.

Now, we're not going to see everything listed above, it's just to give you a flavour of this wonderful area.

Tonight we stay in Requena, a splendid Spanish town with a wonderful old sector. Our hotel has private underground parking.
